Your toenail grows from a small pocket of cells and those cells are known as matrix. As each new generation of cells is formed and they push the previous generation of cells out along with the toenail bed. And this result the toenail grows by being pushed off and out the toenail bed.
Several structures are there that make up the toenail. The lunula is a white crescent shaped structure at the base of the toenail. And the lanula may be small or large and in most of the cases even absent all together. The hyponychium is generally found at the base of the toenail and it used to create a transition zone from the skin to the toenail that allows the toenail to slowly move away from the toenail matrix to the distal tip of the toenail. The attachment to the toenail is referred to as the eponychium at that such point.
